About Me

Hello, I'm David Southworth, a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I work within the BACP's Ethical Framework, maintaining regular clinical supervision and a commitment to ongoing professional development.

My Approach

As a person-centred counsellor, I create a safe, non-judgmental space where we can work together to explore your experiences and challenges. Rather than telling you what to do, I focus on building a therapeutic alliance that can bring about change and new perspectives.

Experience

Through my work with various charities including REACH, Age Concern, Bereavement Counselling Services, and Philippi Trust, I've gained extensive experience helping clients with:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Trauma and abuse
  • Addiction recovery
  • Relationship issues
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Self-esteem and personal growth

Qualifications

My professional journey includes a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, BACP Certificate of Proficiency, and specialized training in online counselling, trauma work, and mindfulness-based approaches. I maintain an Enhanced DBS check and regularly undertake professional development to ensure the highest quality of care for my clients.

How Therapy Helps

Therapy provides a safe harbour where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, gain new perspectives, and develop practical tools for navigating life's challenges. It's a collaborative journey toward understanding, healing, and personal growth.

Emotional Support

In therapy, you'll find a confidential space to express your feelings without judgment. Together, we'll work through emotional challenges, develop coping strategies, and build resilience for life's ups and downs.

Personal Growth

Discover new perspectives and insights about yourself. Therapy helps you understand patterns in your life, make meaningful changes, and develop a stronger sense of self-awareness and confidence.

Support

In a calm, non-judgemental space, we’ll explore your experiences with empathy and honesty. Through reflection and genuine connection, you'll gain insight into your thoughts and feelings — finding your own way forward.

What happens in a session?

Each 50-minute session provides a confidential space where you can talk about what's on your mind. I'll listen attentively and work with you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that feels comfortable for you.

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy varies for each person. Some find short-term work (6-12 sessions) helpful, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly review your progress and adjust our approach to best meet your needs.

Is therapy right for me?

If you're experiencing emotional difficulties, relationship challenges, or simply want to understand yourself better, therapy can help. We can discuss your specific situation and how therapy might benefit you during an initial consultation.

What's your approach?

I practice person-centered therapy, which means I focus on creating a supportive environment where you can explore your experiences freely. I believe you are the expert in your own life, and my role is to help you discover your own path forward.
